British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels down to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - also known as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action underscores British leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This action, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our safety, highlights how British military are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and strong abroad."

In December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
